So.... I was working on an XC60....
A tech is trying to diag a USB not charging an iPhone 5 issue. Basically the USB port will do all the other hard drive things but not with iPhone 5. Anyways, he has the center console loose and I went out to help him. I got a new connector and was looking at the wires in the back seat area. He was in the front seat locating the splice. Well, he left the key on.... which means the SRS yaw rate sensor is active. A slight turn of the console and BOOOOOOM!!!!!! Both of the side curtain airbags go off. Our ears shut down from the pressure and sound wave. After a minute, we can hear a lot better and are completely fine. Damn that was scary.

So, is the dealer going to pay for a new car now that this one is totaled?

we will install all the required parts and notify the customer. Calm down, not all dealers (any business) is runned by shady ass mofo's

I never heard an airbag go off, but it seemed like my colleagues at college loved a bit of shenanigans and rigged those things to blow, unfortunately, on the days I either got sick, or had an appointment.

I have an irrational fear of my air bag spontaneously going off while driving. Most likely when drinking a smoothie from tropical smoothie cafe.

Watched a tech at my buddy's shop stuff a power probe into the harness with the yellow tape around it. He was under the dash and triggered the steering wheel airbag. Damn near launched him into the backseat.

We have to pop them before sending them off to warranty. We made a dumpster get 8 feet off the ground one after putting them on each corner in series :]

Airbags fucking suck when they hit you. But they're great because they keep you in a single piece.

They launched a dumpster. There are no safety precautions for that.

Just roll up the bags and stuff em back in, bit of clear cello tape will hold the trim back together. Remove air bag light, job done all fixed.

Back in the late 80s the then GF's boss had a 300E company car - he was service manager. One morning he got in, turned the key to start it, and BOOM - the driver's side airbag (the only one in the car) smacked him in the face. Covered in cornstarch, he drove to work and called an optician to remake his glasses.

Airbags should be replaced with big fluffy cats.

damn the two-stage airbags weren't invented back then. That must of hurt by the sound of it.

Ha ha. Do you know if it happens often? Any idea what the cost is going to be to fix it up? Seems a shitty place for the yaw sensor to be, on the console and not fixed to the tunnel. I'll have to try remember that incase my vehicle has a similar set up. Never had to worry about this kind of thing on the pre airbag cars I grew up working on.

Dat SCURRY, mang. Glad you're alive.
We had that happen to a tech, guy was on his knees with his legs outside the car, his torso and arms inside fiddling around in the center console, had UNBOLTED the SRS unit, and bumped it.
I thought someone slammed a hood.
Thankfully the curtain bags just barely brushed against his back, and didn't sucker punch him., and the wheel/dash bags didn't go.

The guy was tough ... maybe he leaned back in the seat as he turned the key. Still - it was the first airbag I'd ever seen deployed. Had the same one in my '87 300D, so I always showed it a lot of respect.
